1999–2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 Transmission Repair in Glendale, AZ (4L60E / 4L65E)
Sun West Transmissions — Glendale, AZ. Free estimates and honest advice for 1999-2006 Silverado 1500 owners, with a 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty on qualifying rebuilds and replacements.
The first-generation Silverado 1500, GM’s GMT800 truck built for 1999 through 2006, is still a fixture in the West Valley. You will find them on job sites in Tolleson, on ranch roads out toward Wittmann and in driveways all over Glendale, many with two decades or more of Arizona summers behind them. Most automatic versions use the 4L60E four-speed or its heavier-duty cousin, the 4L65E, and we know those transmissions inside and out. When one starts slipping or drops a gear, Sun West Transmissions can tell you quickly whether a repair, a rebuild or a replacement makes the most sense for a truck this age.
Have a 2007 Silverado Classic? It was built on this same platform for one more year, so most of what follows applies to it too.
Which Transmission Is in Your 1999-2006 Silverado 1500?
For automatic trucks from these years, the lineup is simpler than on later Silverados:
| Engine | Transmission | Speeds | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.3L V6 | 4L60E | 4 | Most automatic V6 trucks |
| 4.8L V8 | 4L60E | 4 | Most trucks |
| 5.3L V8 | 4L60E | 4 | Most trucks |
| 6.0L V8 (some models) | 4L65E | 4 | Heavier-duty version on certain 6.0L trucks |
Some 6.0L trucks and heavier-duty versions of the 1500 can carry a different unit, so we never assume. The RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label in the glovebox, your VIN and the ID tag on the transmission case tell us exactly what you have.
Common 1999-2006 Silverado 1500 Transmission Problems
3-4 clutch burn-up
This is the classic 4L60E failure. The clutch pack that handles third and fourth gear burns up, the truck flares or slips on the upshift into those gears, and eventually it may lose them altogether. Towing, heat and age all speed it along. Read more about 4L60E 3-4 clutch failure.
Sunshell failure
The reaction sunshell is a thin steel shell that links two parts of the gear train. When its splines strip or the shell cracks, the truck can suddenly lose some of its gears. See 4L60E sunshell failure.
No reverse
A truck that drives forward but will not back up is a well-known 4L60E problem. Internal clutch or drum failure and a broken sunshell are among the causes, and pinpointing which one shapes the repair plan. See 4L60E no reverse.
Torque converter clutch (TCC) trouble
When the converter clutch slips, shudders or fails to apply, you may feel a vibration at highway speed, notice higher RPM while cruising or see a check engine light. The cause can be the converter, a solenoid or the valve body, and ignoring it adds heat to an already stressed transmission.
Trucks with the 4L65E share these failure patterns, although its upgraded internals give it more margin. Learn more on our 4L60E rebuild page.
Warning Signs in an Older Silverado
- Slipping or a sudden rev flare between gears
- No third or fourth gear, or a truck that feels stuck in a low gear
- Delayed or missing reverse
- A shudder or vibration at steady highway speed
- A check engine light, especially after towing
- Dark or burnt-smelling fluid on the dipstick
If your truck is slipping, keep trips short and skip trailer duty until it is checked. Our diagnostic testing tells us whether the problem is electrical, hydraulic or internal.

Rebuild, Remanufactured or Used?
With an older truck, your budget and plans matter as much as the diagnosis. We offer:
- A rebuild of your original 4L60E or 4L65E, correcting the weak points that led to the failure
- A remanufactured replacement, when that is the faster or more practical route
- A good used transmission, for owners keeping costs as low as possible. We will explain the terms up front.
Qualifying rebuilds and replacements are covered by our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs, honored at our Glendale shop. See warranty details and financing options.
After Installation
Every installation on these trucks finishes with the same checklist:
- Cooler flush or replacement, because debris from a failed unit can hide in the cooler and lines
- Fresh DEXRON VI filled to the correct level
- Control module programming or a relearn where needed (TCM programming)
- A road test to confirm smooth shifts, converter lockup and no leaks
Keeping an Older Silverado Cool in Arizona
- Change the fluid and filter on schedule, and more often if you tow (transmission fluid change)
- Add an auxiliary transmission cooler if you pull a trailer or camper
- Use Tow/Haul mode if your truck has it, and select a lower gear on long climbs so the transmission is not hunting
- Do not ignore a weak radiator or cooling fan; engine heat and transmission heat feed each other
- Stay within your truck’s tow rating, especially with an older transmission

1999-2006 Silverado 1500 Transmission FAQ
Is a 4L60E rebuild worth it on a 20-year-old truck?
Often, yes. If the engine and frame are solid, a rebuilt transmission can keep a paid-off truck working. We will give you a straight answer after inspection.
Can my 4L60E be built stronger for towing?
Yes. A rebuild is the right time to add heavier-duty parts where they make sense, and a billet torque converter upgrade is available (see our 4L60E rebuild prices). Tell us how you use the truck and we will recommend what fits.
What is the difference between the 4L60E and the 4L65E?
The 4L65E is a heavier-duty version of the same design with upgraded internal parts, used behind some 6.0L engines. The two look alike from the outside, which is why we confirm with the RPO code and ID tag.
