The GMT900 Silverado 1500, built for the 2007 through 2013 model years, sits right on the line between two eras of GM automatics. Early trucks relied on the long-running four-speed 4L60E family, while many later ones moved to the six-speed 6L80E. Trucks from these years still work every day in Glendale, Peoria and Avondale, and after a dozen or more Arizona summers, worn transmissions are common. Sun West Transmissions repairs both designs, and the first step is always identifying which one your truck has.
One note on 2007: a truck sold as the Silverado Classic is a carryover of the previous generation, so its transmission setup follows the 1999-2006 trucks.
Which Transmission Is in Your 2007-2013 Silverado 1500?
Two transmission families were used in these trucks, split mainly by engine and model year:
| Engine | Transmission | Speeds | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.3L V6 | 4L60E family | 4 | V6 trucks |
| 4.8L V8 | 4L60E family | 4 | Many trucks; confirm by RPO code |
| 5.3L V8, earlier trucks | 4L60E, 4L65E or 4L70E | 4 | Common before about 2009-2010 |
| 5.3L V8, from about 2009-2010 | 6L80E | 6 | Most trucks from the changeover on |
| 6.0L or 6.2L V8 (where offered) | 6L80E | 6 | Typically paired with the six-speed |
Because the switch from four to six speeds happened gradually, two trucks from the same model year can have different transmissions. The Service Parts Identification label in the glovebox lists the RPO codes, your VIN confirms the engine and build, and the ID tag on the transmission gives the final word. We confirm the exact unit before we quote.
Common Transmission Problems in 2007-2013 Silverados
Four-speed trucks: the 4L60E family
The best-known weak spot of the 4L60E family is the 3-4 clutch pack, which can burn up and leave the truck slipping or missing third and fourth gear. See 4L60E 3-4 clutch failure. The reaction sunshell can also crack or strip its splines, and losing reverse is another familiar complaint (sunshell failure and no reverse). The heavier-duty 4L65E and 4L70E share the same basic design, so they tend to wear in similar ways. Our 4L60E rebuild page has more detail.
Six-speed trucks: the 6L80E
The 6L80E added two more gears for highway cruising and towing, along with its own trouble spots. Torque converter shudder at light throttle is the most familiar (6L80E shudder), followed by harsh or erratic shifting from valve body wear, internal clutch damage or the internal control module (6L80E shifting hard).
Warning Signs in a GMT900 Silverado
- Engine speed climbs on the 2-3 or 3-4 shift without the truck picking up speed
- Third or fourth gear goes missing on a four-speed truck
- Reverse that engages late, slips or does not engage at all
- A shudder at steady speed on a six-speed truck
- Harsh shifts, or a check engine light that comes back after clearing
- Dark fluid with a burnt smell
Catching problems early can mean a smaller repair bill. Our diagnostic testing checks codes, live data, fluid condition and wiring before we recommend anything.

Rebuild, Remanufactured or Used?
For a truck this age, the best choice often depends on how long you plan to keep it. Sun West offers three paths:
- Rebuilding your transmission: we tear down your unit, replace worn and failed parts, and address the known weak points of the 4L60E or 6L80E.
- A remanufactured transmission: a ready-to-install replacement that can shorten downtime.
- A good used transmission: a budget-minded choice for an older truck. We will go over the terms with you before you commit.
Our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty, with no deductible on covered repairs, applies to qualifying rebuilds and replacements and is honored at our Glendale shop. Full details are on our warranty page.
After Installation
Getting the transmission back in is only part of the job. Before your Silverado leaves, we:
- Flush the cooler lines, or replace the cooler if it is contaminated, so debris from the old unit cannot reach the new one
- Fill to the correct level with DEXRON VI, the fluid GM specifies for the 4L60E family and the 6L80E
- Program or update the control module where needed and perform the adaptive relearn (TCM programming)
- Road test the truck to confirm shift quality, converter lockup and a leak-free install
Heat and Towing Tips for 2007-2013 Silverados
- Four-speed trucks are especially sensitive to heat under load. Use Tow/Haul mode when you tow, and do not let the truck hunt between third and fourth on grades.
- On a long climb, select a lower range so the transmission holds a gear instead of shifting back and forth.
- Keep the engine cooling system in good shape; radiator and fan problems raise transmission temperatures too.
- Change the fluid more often if you tow or drive in heavy summer traffic (transmission fluid change).
- If you pull a camper or boat regularly, an auxiliary transmission cooler adds a margin of safety.

2007-2013 Silverado 1500 Transmission FAQ
How can I tell whether my truck has a four-speed or a six-speed?
Check the RPO codes on the glovebox label, or call us with your VIN. As a rule of thumb, V6 trucks and many earlier 4.8L and 5.3L trucks have a 4L60E-family four-speed, while most 5.3L trucks from about 2009-2010 and the larger V8s have the 6L80E.
Is it worth fixing the transmission in an older truck?
If the engine and body are solid, usually yes. A repaired transmission costs far less than replacing the truck. We will give you a free estimate and an honest recommendation.
Why did my 4L60E lose third and fourth gear?
The usual cause is a burned 3-4 clutch pack. Heat, towing and worn internal sealing parts all contribute. A rebuild with updated parts addresses the root cause.
