Sun West Transmissions — Glendale, AZ. Free estimates for gas and Duramax trucks, plus a 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty on qualifying transmission rebuilds and replacements.
Heavy-duty Silverados from 2015 through 2019 are the trucks West Valley contractors, ranchers and RV owners rely on for real work. Fifth-wheels, equipment trailers and loaded beds keep the transmission under steady load, and Arizona summers stack heat on top of it. Whether your truck has the 6.0L gas V8 or the 6.6L Duramax, Sun West Transmissions in Glendale will pinpoint the cause and lay out your options before any work begins. If your 2015-2019 Silverado 2500HD transmission is slipping, shuddering or setting codes, start with a free estimate.
Which Transmission Is in Your 2015–2019 Silverado 2500HD?
In this generation, the engine tells you which automatic you have, and the same pairings carry over to the Silverado 3500HD:
| Engine | Transmission | Speeds | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0L V8 gas | 6L90E | 6 | Heavy-duty member of GM’s six-speed family; DEXRON VI fluid |
| 6.6L Duramax LML diesel (2015–2016) | Allison 1000 | 6 | Built for diesel torque and heavy towing |
| 6.6L Duramax L5P diesel (2017–2019) | Allison 1000 | 6 | Same six-speed family behind the newer L5P engine |
Check the RPO label in the glovebox or give us your VIN, and we will confirm the exact unit before quoting. Driving the GMC version? The Sierra HD of these years uses the same pairings; see our GMC Sierra 2500HD transmission repair page.
Common Transmission Problems in 2015–2019 Silverado HD Trucks
6L90E behind the 6.0L gas V8
The 6L90E shares its layout with the lighter-duty 6L80E but uses stronger internals for HD trucks. Typical complaints include torque converter shudder, harsh or delayed shifts and clutch wear on trucks that tow near their limits. Its control module and shift solenoids sit inside the transmission, so an electrical fault can feel a lot like mechanical failure. Our 6L90E rebuild page explains how we deal with each weak point.
Allison 1000 behind the Duramax
The Allison has a reputation for strength, but it is not indestructible. Heavy loads in desert heat, and especially aftermarket engine tuning, wear the clutch packs and torque converter faster. Owners notice RPM flare between gears, a converter clutch that slips, harsh downshifts or a truck that drops into a default gear after setting a code. Wiring and sensor faults can produce similar symptoms, which is why we test before we tear anything down. Read more on Allison 1000 problems and our Allison 1000 rebuild service.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- RPM flare between shifts, especially under load
- A shudder at steady speeds that feels like rough pavement
- Harsh engagement into Drive or Reverse
- A check engine light with stored transmission codes
- Transmission temperature climbing faster than usual when towing
- Dark, burnt-smelling fluid or leaks under the truck
If the truck drops into a default gear while you are pulling a trailer, ease off, find a safe place to stop and have it checked before hooking up again. Continuing to pull a heavy load on a slipping transmission is the fastest way to turn a repair into a rebuild.

Rebuild, Remanufactured or Used?
Once internal damage is confirmed, Sun West gives you three choices:
- Rebuild your transmission: we tear down your unit, replace what is worn and reinforce known trouble spots for the work you do.
- Remanufactured replacement: a complete, already-rebuilt unit that can cut the time your truck is down.
- Good used transmission: a lower-cost option when the budget is tight.
Our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty covers qualifying rebuilds and replacements with no deductible on covered repairs, honored at our Glendale shop. For a truck that tows for a living, compare a rebuild with targeted upgrades closely before deciding.
After Installation
Getting the transmission in is only part of the job. We also:
- Program the transmission control module or update its software as needed, then complete the relearn
- Flush the cooler and lines, or replace the cooler if it could hold debris
- Fill with the correct fluid: DEXRON VI for the 6L90E and the GM-specified fluid for the Allison
- Road test the truck, then recheck fluid level, codes and connections
Duramax owners can learn more on our diesel transmission repair page.
Arizona Heat and Fifth-Wheel Towing Tips
HD trucks here often pull fifth-wheels and goosenecks through serious heat. To protect the transmission:
- Use Tow/Haul mode, and on the Duramax use the exhaust brake on long downgrades to save your service brakes
- Watch transmission temperature on long climbs and back off if it rises quickly
- Shorten fluid service intervals if you tow heavy or often; see our transmission fluid change page
- Keep the cooler and radiator fins clean
- Stay within the ratings for your cab, axle and drivetrain combination

2015-2019 Silverado 2500HD Transmission FAQ
Does the 3500HD use a different transmission?
Not in these years. The 3500HD uses the same 6L90E with the 6.0L gas engine and the same Allison 1000 with the Duramax. We still confirm by VIN or RPO label before ordering parts.
Will engine tuning hurt my Allison?
Added power puts more stress on the clutches and torque converter. If your truck is tuned, tell us so we can recommend the right upgrades during a rebuild.
Can low fluid cause shifting problems?
Yes. A small leak at a cooler line or seal can drop the level enough to cause slipping and overheating, so we check for leaks during every diagnosis.
