P0776 Code: Pressure Control Solenoid B Performance or Stuck Off — Meaning & Fix

The P0776 code tells you the transmission computer commanded a pressure change through solenoid B and did not get the result it expected. Drivers usually feel it as a shift that slips, flares or lands harshly, and the transmission may switch to limp mode to protect itself.
Below, Sun West Transmissions in Glendale explains what P0776 means, what causes it and how we find the fault before replacing parts.
What P0776 Means
The standard definition of P0776 is “Pressure Control Solenoid B Performance or Stuck Off.” Pressure control solenoids regulate the hydraulic pressure that applies the clutches inside an automatic transmission. “Stuck off” means the solenoid, or the valve it controls, does not seem to respond when commanded. “Performance” means the transmission’s response falls outside the range the computer expects.
Many transmissions catch this problem by comparing input and output speed sensor readings during a shift. If a shift that solenoid B controls takes too long, slips or produces the wrong gear ratio, the code sets. Exact wording and solenoid letters vary by manufacturer, so solenoid B may control line pressure on one transmission and a single clutch on another.
Common Causes of P0776
- A worn or sticking pressure control solenoid
- Valve body wear that lets pressure leak past the valve. See what is a valve body
- Low, dirty or burnt fluid
- Internal leaks from worn seals that keep a clutch from getting full pressure
- Worn clutches that cannot hold, even with correct pressure
Because P0776 is usually set by how the transmission behaves rather than by a broken wire, the cause can be anywhere from the solenoid to the clutch it feeds. That is why replacing the solenoid without testing does not always fix it.
Symptoms of P0776
- Check engine light
- Slipping during or right after certain shifts. See transmission slipping
- Engine RPM flaring between gears
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Limp mode, with the transmission stuck in one gear
- Higher fluid temperatures or a burnt smell if slipping continues
Can I Keep Driving?
Be careful with this one. P0776 often comes with slipping, and slipping creates heat that damages clutches and fluid quickly, especially in a Phoenix summer. Learn why transmissions overheat.
If the vehicle is in limp mode, a short, gentle drive to the shop is usually fine, but stay off the freeway. If it slips badly, smells burnt or will not move properly, stop driving and call us at (623) 473-9800 to talk through your options.
How Sun West Diagnoses P0776
At our Glendale shop, we test before we replace parts. Our process includes:
- Scanning all modules, reviewing freeze-frame data and noting which shift set the code
- Checking fluid level and condition, including signs of clutch material or burnt fluid
- Inspecting wiring and connectors, and checking circuit voltage and resistance to rule out electrical faults
- Testing how the solenoid responds when commanded with the scan tool
- Pressure testing to see whether the clutch circuit holds pressure or leaks it away
- Road testing with live data, watching shift times, slip and gear ratio

Repair Options
Once we know where the pressure is being lost, the repair may include:
- Wiring or connector repair if testing finds a circuit problem
- Solenoid replacement when the solenoid is worn or sticking. See solenoid replacement
- Valve body repair when worn bores or sticking valves are bleeding off pressure. See valve body repair
- TCM programming or an adaptive relearn after repairs, when the vehicle requires it. See TCM programming
- Rebuild only when there is internal damage, such as worn clutches or leaking seals. See transmission rebuild

- P0868 – Transmission fluid pressure low
- P0700 – Transmission control system malfunction
P0776 Code FAQ
Is P0776 an electrical problem?
Usually not by itself. As a performance code, it often points to a sticking solenoid, valve body wear or a clutch that is not holding. We still test the wiring, because a poor connection can contribute.
Will a new solenoid fix P0776?
Only if the solenoid is the cause. If valve body wear or worn clutches are behind it, a new solenoid will not solve the problem. Testing first helps you avoid paying for parts you do not need.
How much does it cost to fix P0776?
That depends on what testing finds and on your vehicle. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote.
