A Denali nameplate does not guarantee the eight-speed. Earlier 5.3L Denalis, for example, use the 6L80E. To be certain, check the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label in your glovebox, or call us with your VIN; the ID tag on the transmission confirms it during inspection.

A shudder you can feel through the seat

On both transmissions, a familiar complaint is a shudder or vibration as the torque converter clutch applies, often at steady speeds around town or on the highway. In a quiet Denali cabin, it is hard to miss. On the 6L80E, the converter clutch itself is the usual culprit, sometimes made worse by worn fluid; see 6L80E torque converter shudder. On the 8L90, GM updated the recommended fluid to address shudder, and a correct fluid exchange helps some trucks, while damaged converters need replacement; see 8L90 shudder.

Firm, clunky or delayed shifts

Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts, a clunk as you roll to a stop and slow engagement into gear can show up on either unit. On the six-speed, valve body wear and the control module mounted inside the transmission are common causes (6L80E shifting hard). Does every 2014-2018 Sierra Denali have the eight-speed?

No. 6.2L trucks from 2015 on use the 8L90, and some 5.3L trucks from 2016 got it too, but earlier trucks and many 5.3L trucks use the 6L80E. Your VIN and RPO codes tell us for sure.

My Sierra shudders at highway speed. Is the transmission failing?

Not necessarily. Converter shudder can sometimes be improved with the correct fluid service, but a damaged converter must be replaced. A test drive and scan usually point us in the right direction.

Will my truck shift normally after the repair?

That is the goal of every job. We program and relearn the transmission after installation and road test the truck before it goes home.
