The 2015–2020 GMC Yukon and its longer sibling, the Yukon XL, work hard in the West Valley. They carry full rows of passengers, pull campers up I-17 toward Flagstaff and sit in summer traffic with the A/C running flat out. That mix of weight, heat and towing is tough on any automatic, and this generation used three different transmissions depending on engine and year. At Sun West Transmissions in Glendale, we test first and explain what we find before recommending any work on your 2015-2020 Yukon transmission.

Which Transmission Is in Your 2015–2020 Yukon?

GM matched the transmission to the engine. For the Yukon and Yukon XL, it typically breaks down like this:

EngineTransmissionSpeedsNotes
5.3L V8 (most non-Denali trucks)6L80E6Used in all six model years; takes DEXRON VI fluid
6.2L V8 (Denali), 2015–20178L908Most Denalis of these years; confirm a 2015 by its RPO label
6.2L V8 (Denali and other 6.2L trucks), 2018–202010L8010Co-developed with Ford; takes DEXRON ULV fluid

To confirm, check the Service Parts Identification label in the glovebox, which lists three-character RPO codes, including the transmission’s. Your VIN confirms the engine and build. Read either one to us at (623) 473-9800 and we will verify the exact unit before quoting.

Common Transmission Problems in 2015–2020 Yukons

6L80E behind the 5.3L: converter shudder and rough shifts

The six-speed is a solid design, but miles and heat bring out a few familiar patterns. The best known is torque converter shudder, a buzzing vibration under light throttle that many owners mistake for an engine misfire or a tire problem. Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts, slow engagement into Drive and shift-related trouble codes can come from valve body wear or from the control module, which on the 6L80E is mounted inside the transmission. Our 6L80E rebuild page explains what we replace.

8L90 in 2015–2017 Denalis: shudder and clunky low-gear shifts

The eight-speed added gears and efficiency, along with complaints about a shudder at steady cruising speeds and abrupt shifts in the lower gears. GM resolved many shudder cases with a revised fluid and service procedure, but a Denali that drove with the problem for a long time may already have converter damage. 10L80 in 2018–2020 Denalis: busy or harsh shifting

A healthy ten-speed shifts quickly and smoothly. Some owners report hard shifts, a bump when coasting to a stop or a transmission that keeps hunting between gears on the highway. A software update and adaptive relearn fix some of those complaints; others trace back to valve body problems or internal wear. See our 10L80 harsh shifting and 10L80 rebuild pages.

Warning Signs in a Yukon or Yukon XL

If your Yukon slips badly or seems stuck in one gear, stop towing and limit driving until it is inspected. Catching a cooler-line leak or software issue early costs far less than replacing a failed transmission.

2015-2020 Yukon Transmission FAQ

Does the Yukon XL use a different transmission than the Yukon?

No. The XL has a longer body and wheelbase, but with the same engine and model year it uses the same transmission: the 6L80E with the 5.3L, and the 8L90 or 10L80 with the 6.2L, depending on year.

Is a shudder in my Denali a sign the transmission is failing?

Not necessarily. On the eight-speed, shudder is often tied to the fluid and the converter clutch, and a correct fluid exchange can solve it. If the converter is already damaged, it needs repair or replacement. We test before recommending either.

Can you diagnose my Yukon if the only symptom is a check engine light?

Yes. We scan the codes, review live data and road test the SUV. Many transmission codes come from sensors, wiring or software rather than internal failure, and those repairs cost far less.
